I have been pondering community—and the loss of it in modern times—quite a bit in recent years. Churches have been an example for me of where the sacrifices of being in community are too great, particularly for women. I appreciated that you did acknowledge others’ varying belief systems in this regard, as I nearly stopped reading once Christianity became a theme. Nevertheless, I have been trying to figure out a remedy for the disconnectedness of modern life.

I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts :)

I completely agree about churches: some can be patriarchal and very harmful to women. I'm lucky enough to attend a church that is egalitarian and in which women can be pastors, but some of my friends are less lucky.

"I have been trying to figure out a remedy for the disconnectedness of modern life."

What do you think the remedy would be?

Thank you for your response! My family visited Scotland last year and we were shocked at the feeling of community that was immediately extended to us despite the fact that we were obviously outsiders. Because we were afraid to drive our first night there (not just driving on opposite side of the road, but scary, narrow roads!), we walked around the village and quickly met so many friendly and helpful people. My family and I kept saying, "Wow, within 24 hours we are already a part of the community!" Many people went out of their way to help. They loved talking about their dogs. I have since pondered that experience and wondered how to recapture it in my life in the US. Not sure I have any answers, but I have certainly reflected on it a lot.
