““Our goal is not to change people’s views of issues, but to change their views of each other.” And to do that, we need to start with ourselves. I am a cult survivor and have gone through 20 years of therapy. If I learned one thing, it was to trust myself first--to look in the mirror. I saw the sins for which I judged others living front and center, inside my own heart. It was projection with a capital P.
James Baldwin said it clearly: “Therefore, whatever white people do not know about negroes reveals, precisely and inexorably, what they do not know about themselves.” (The Fire Next Time) Peter G, Newton, MA
“Hearing this man’s story didn’t change my perception of the black community. But it did change my perception of him.” ❤️
I recently encountered the motto “hard on ideas, soft on people,” which reminded me of the classic “hate the sin, love the sinner.” It is a necessary skill to be able to hold a person’s convictions in contempt without diminishing that person’s inalienable worth. I’m glad you shouted out Braver Angels, as their workshops have helped me to disagree better.

Another gem! If we worked more towards this kind of mindset we would have less events like the recent attempted shooting at the press event.
Thanks!
And that is, unironically, the dream <3
