When a Dad cries at his daughter's wedding it is because he doesn't actually believe in good marriages? Come on! Crying for the loss of a loved one is normal. Crying at times of transition and when one chapter ends and another begins is natural.
How cruel to take the occasion of grief to mock someone's faith. You have to be very unfeeling is to be so interested in slamming Christians that you can't even treat them with dignity when they are in pain.

He had been dealt a very hard hand in life, and had spent many years in a lot of pain. I also suspect, given his vitriol towards the Church, that we might have done something to exacerbate that pain; vitriol like his doesn't come out of thin air.
I find it all too easy to dismiss as wishful thinking in the face of fear. We all feel, however unimportant we are, that we are the center of the universe and can't imagine it without us. So we hear alluring fables, drop a dollar in the collection plate, and, oh, do as you;re told and don't defy authority.
One Sunday morning, aged eleven, I wanted to go back to sleep and in fifteen seconds of unrestrained thought, I became an atheist. Heaven is absurd, God is preposterous, we have no undying part,
Thanks for commenting! Even though we don't quite see eye to eye on this one, I can see your passion and I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
I'd make one tweak, if I may: "We all feel, however unimportant we are, that we are the center of the universe and can't imagine it without us"--since finding God I'm actually way less convinced that I'm at the center of the universe than I used to be. It's refreshing :) Sort of like letting a load off. If you got to that freer place by another way, more power to you!
"Finding God" is a perplexing turn of phrase, as though finding a lost ring of keys. Since I am convinced that spiritualism and religion are relics of humanity's ignorant childhood, to come from noonbelief to faith sounds like a psychiatric event, not a revelation.

The hound of heaven pursues me, opening the door for me to pursue Him and have compassion, love, peace....
Oh I love that! Is that a quote from someone?
